The device you are streaming from (smartphone, laptop) and the receiving device (Chromecast, Apple TV, or Smart TV) must be connected to the same wireless network. If the devices are on different subnets or connected to different routers, they will not see each other.

What is the Remote Playback API?

The Remote Playback API allows a website to detect if there is a smart speaker or audio system nearby that supports Chromecast or AirPlay. It then provides you with a button to send music or a podcast directly to that device, while still allowing you to control playback from your laptop or phone.

What devices can you stream audio to?

  • Google Cast: Allows streaming from the Chrome browser to speakers with Chromecast Audio, Google Home, smart displays, and TVs (which can function as audio output devices). It is supported by a huge number of music applications.
  • Apple AirPlay: Streaming from Apple devices (iPhone, Mac) to HomePod, speakers with AirPlay 2 support, Apple TV, and smart TVs (for audio output).
