How to test a MIDI keyboard

Connect your keyboard to the computer and click “Connect MIDI keyboard”. Then allow MIDI access and select an input. Press keys individually and together: yellow keys are held down, and marked keys have sent a Note On message. Velocity (1–127) describes the attack of a note, not continuous pressure. Some keyboards send a fixed velocity.

Set the keyboard range

MIDI does not report the physical number of keys. Initially the test shows all 128 MIDI notes. Press “Detect keyboard range”, then the lowest and highest keys. The range is applied automatically. You can also select a preset number of keys or all 128 MIDI notes. C4 corresponds to MIDI 60. Progress counts different notes within the confirmed range; reaching 100% means a signal was received from each note, not that every hardware function has been diagnosed. Changing input or range starts a new test.

Pedal, wheels and sound

Sustain, modulation and pitch bend are shown with their MIDI channels. Sound is off by default. Enable it to hear a quiet triangle tone: A4 = 440 Hz, pitch bend ±2 semitones, modulation up to 50 cents at 5 Hz, and up to 32 voices. These are fixed test settings; the keyboard may use different settings in other software. The test does not play the keyboard’s own sound. Sound stops when the tab is hidden. If MIDI is unavailable, try a browser with Web MIDI support and check the device connection and site permissions.
